A Prayer of Surrender
Thank you Jesus, I praise you and adore You
because I trust You have the solution.
I don’t have to feel Your presence to know that You are with me
and probably carrying me through this. Amen.
It is in my genetic disposition to quickly be disturbed. My mind knows it will be ok, but my emotions can act up and tell me it is too overwhelming – shut down, give up, quit, cry, panic and say those “sharp words” typical of someone who had enough.
Patrick taught me to say this prayer of surrender. He taught me to pray when I do not feel like praying because of my anger. He taught me to start acting calm even if I don’t feel peaceful inside.
I attack him with the words “I can’t. I don’t want to act. I want to be true to what I feel.”
He says, “Fake it until you make it.”
I scream back, “NOooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I don’t believe that.”
Until one day, I decided to follow him.
I made the “Sign of the Cross” even if I did not feel like it. I held my Cross of St. Benedict. I prayed this exact prayer of surrender. And, I waited. I still feel sad and frustrated.
And, then I realized that if I really know Jesus, I won’t be by myself in this situation. That realization is already a grace. Jesus already acted on this prayer of surrender.
Jesus wants to give us blessings. And, in this blessings, the devil creates a astounding “show” of focusing on all the bad things in our lives. We succumb to the stress and the negativity. We refuse to look at the blessings because we do not feel it or see it yet.
Yet, when we start to make the Sign of the Cross (In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit), we are asking right away for the Holy Trinity to come to us. How can we be lied to that God won’t hear us? Yes, we keep believing the lie. Most of the time, we get easily convinced.
In other words, the devil plays us out all the time. We keep going to his snare of stress. He wants us to be unhappy and miserable.
God is with us. For He never leaves us. But, we are unable to feel His presence, and He allows that to happen to us.
It is because, this is only the time He can teach us to build our spiritual muscles to trust Him. If He gives us everything we want, when we want it, how we want it …
… We will end up as wimps, weak and spoiled.
We are in a battle, the enemy is sin and misery, thus, expect that. But, at the same time, expect that Jesus is on our side, just because He says so. Have you forgotten He is God?
Thus, surrender the pain and miseries and just expect that it will not last forever. If we are still breathing, then Jesus might be invisible because we do not have yet the eyes of faith but He is with us.
On the hand, if we do die of our miseries and stress, because it does feel too overwhelming, do not worry. It is still ok, because then Jesus is more alive.
You really can’t lose.
